What is Scagliola?
Scagliola is an Italian Renaissance plaster art that has been used for centuries to create faux stone. We see scagliola in churches, banks, courthouses - it is the “impossible” stone on columns, walls, floors, and even furniture.
Learning Curve
Our conservators have been practicing with scagliola for years before we finally put it to the test. We currently use scagliola to repair stone objects and architectural elements where color, texture, and veining matches are paramount. It is a highly versatile material, but one that is not always predictable.
Projects
Check out the images for some of our Scagliola projects. We have repaired stone columns, fireplace mantles, and hearths among other things.
This historic Nero Portoro marble fireplace surround was in bad shape. It was dirty, hazy, and missing its keystone.
We created a stencil and then a sample to match the stone.
The finished keystone blends in perfectly with the surrounding stone, which was also cleaned and polished.
